A man was handed an effective jail term after pleading guilty to his involvement in the rape of a Filipino man two years ago.

Helms Mohamed Elmosaty, 26, an Egyptian, had been charged with having knowingly assisted in the commission of the rape and also with having held the victim against his will. Another Egyptian national, Ramy Gamal Elasrag, 35, had been charged with the actual rape and with the illegal arrest of the victim.

The court, presided by Magistrate Aaron Bugeja, heard how the rape took place on August 31, 2015 at the Mall Gardens at Floriana.

Although both men had denied the charges upon their arraignment, Mr Elmosaty had subsequently changed his plea and admitted.

The court declared the accused guilty and condemned him to a jail term of 2 years 6 months.

Police Inspectors Saviour Baldacchino and Jeffrey Scicluna prosecuted.
