A new centre for disabled people in Sliema will help its clients develop the skills needed to live an independent life, parliamentary secretary Justyne Caruana said today.

The Skill Space centre is equipped with various tools to help disabled people, their family members and carers adapt to differences between life at home and that within specialised centres. It involves a €750,000 yearly outlay.

Carers and relatives will be trained on how to better involve patients in their everyday life and help them bring their abilities to light.

10 patients have been enrolled in the programme with the number expected to rise to 50 in the coming months, the parliamentary secretariat for the rights of disabled persons said in a statement.

Dr Caruana said that the care model embodied by the Skills Space would prove more effective and create "a continuous loop between work at the centre and life at home."
