As expected, the Premier Class race was the major event during yesterday’s 56th meeting of the season at Marsa Racetrack.

The race was won by the most consistent horse this year – Italian Overtaker By Sib under the guidance of Marco Refalo. All races on the card were held over the mile distance.

Twelve horses lined up for the Premier race as Rickshow (Mario Fenech) stormed ahead in the initial stages, opening a small lead from Rififi Nonantais (Noel Baldacchino) and Overtaker By Sib.

With a lap to go Overtaker by Sib started to accelerate its pace and eventually nosed ahead some 400m from the finishing line.

The Italian horse cruised to its 11th win of the year and third in a row by eight lengths from Royal De Vaiges (David Ellul), Rififi Nonantais and Matrix Revolution (Cliferty Calleja).

Overtaker By Sib clocked an average time of 1.13.1” per kilometre.

The other races in programme were open for Gold, Silver, Bronze and Copper class trotters.

In the Gold race, favourite Cummin (Rodney Gatt) came more into the picture around 800m from the post before overcoming Atomic Rapida, driven by Paul Bonello, in the straight for home.

For Cummin, this was its third successive win at Marsa and eighth in 2016.

Energitj (Carl Caruana) and Livi Cantona (Mario Fenech) came home in third and fourth place, respectively.

In the first Silver race, Nathaniel Barbara put mare Twostep in front when the front horses turned for last stretch before the post.

Twostep maintained its position to win the race ahead of Udon d’Occagnes (Tony Demanuele).

Barkaks Barabbas (Carl Caruana) went unchallenged for most of the distance in the next Silver race, going on to seal its second win at Marsa in front of Purple Hall (Charles Camilleri).

In the other Silver Class race, Tsar Turgot (Mark Desira) took its first win after holding off the challenge of White Flame (David Ellul) and Quozak Prior (Redent Magro) in the final metres.

Another meeting at the racetrack will be held on Sunday afternoon.
