Research, management of climate change risk in Malta

The impacts of climate change on risk management and the challenges Malta faced with higher risks associated with extreme weather events was the theme of a keynote address delivered by Shield Consultants managing director John Schembri at the second seminar in the University of Malta’s Climate Change Research Seminar Series. It was jointly organised by the Climate Change Platform (CCP) and the Public Risk Management Organisation (Primo).

Another speaker was Prof. Lino Briguglio, director of the University’s Islands and Small States Institute, who stressed the importance of considering disaster risk reduction strategies to increase resilience.

This was followed by a discussion by a panel including Local Government Department director Adrian Mifsud, Malta Financial Service Authority senior manager Luciano Micallef, John Mifsud from the Malta Insurance Association, Simon Grima, head of the Insurance Department and chairman of Primo’s Education Committee, and John Paul Cauchi from Flimkien Għal Ambjent Aħjar (FAA).

The CCP, set up under the auspices of the Islands and Small States Institute, aims to facilitate collaboration between University entities and individuals interested in climate change issues, and to promote research and teaching initiatives relating to climate change. The aim of these seminars is to present research developed by members of the University and to identify gaps where further research is needed to support policy.
