The 11th edition of a five-week International Ocean Institute regional ocean governance course was recently launched at the University of Malta. There are 18 participants in this year’s course, coming from Malta, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Iran, Croatia, Poland, Lithuania, Turkey and China.

The course deals with coastal and ocean management, with an emphasis on the moral, ethical and legal alpects of ocean governance. This year’s programme includes a seminar focusing on sustainable development goal 14, which concerns the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources and another seminar on Arctic issues. Two field trips will also be held, one at Grand Harbour and Marsaxlokk and the other to the Dwejra marine protected area.

Over the past 10 years the IOI course has trained 181 participants from a total of 35 countries bordering the Mediterranean, Black and Caspian Seas, as well as from a number of observer countries, including China. The training programme builds upon the IOI’s 35 years’ experience in conducting training and capacity building programmes on ocean governance.

The course is directed by IOI honorary president Dr Awni Behnam and managed by Prof. Alan Deidun from the University’s Department of Geosciences. The IOI runs similar training courses in other regions, including Canada, China, Brazil, Thailand, South Africa and Turkmenistan.
