Which authors and themes do you prefer?
Being a political science student, my most preferred theme is that of international relations, with my favourite author being Joseph Nye. Alfred Tabone, MA in European Politics, Economics and Law.
The beauty of doing an English degree is being aware of all the different things out there to read. I will read anything that comes my way, but I absolutely love fantasy novels. Victoria Melita Zammit, Masters in Translation and Terminology Studies.
Right now I’m really into Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series, which I suppose would classify as fantasy novels. Generally I go for fantasy just because it allows me to distance myself from reality for a bit. Timothy Garrett, Bachelor of Library, Information & Archive Studies.
Do students nowadays still read? Why/why not?
They do read. The question one has to answer is whether they read the right things, due to all the distractions that modern-day reality brings about. Alfred Tabone
Most people at University I talk to say “I used to love reading, but I don’t have time”. I think young people have forgotten the joys of reading in favour of their studying. But we all need a break, don’t we? Victoria Melita Zammit
I’d say the number is decreasing due to the constant availability of online resources and people’s decreasing attention span. I think students would rather read articles for five minutes than a chapter for an hour. Timothy Garrett
Do you prefer reading a printed book, a Kindle or online? Why/why not?
Nothing beats the old-fashioned hardbound copy. As Richard Quest rightly states, the “crinkle of the page” beats new methods of reading any day. Alfred Tabone
I prefer physical copies because it’s so much fun to carry them around, mark the pages you like most, flip through the pages and enjoy the feel of the book. It’s also easier to mark your progress when you read a physical copy of a book – you can calculate how many pages there are left until the end with just a glance. Victoria Melita Zammit
It really depends on which book I’d be reading, although generally speaking nowadays I read most books off my Kindle, which I was initially averse to but now see the convenience of. Timothy Garrett
