Keith BuhagiarKeith Buhagiar

Archaelogist Keith Buhagiar will give a presentation of his PhD research on the use of water in Malta from medieval times to the beginning of the 20th century. The presentation will be held at the AZAD Foundation, 224, Republic Street, Valletta, on Friday at 6pm.

Dr Buhagiar’s presentation will highlight the findings of his archaelogical, geological and historical research over the past 15 years to investigate Maltese water management between AD 900 and 1900. The research has been published in the book Malta and Water (AD900 to 1900): Irrigating a Semi-Arid landscape.

Central to his presentation will be the presence of water reservoirs, cisterns, wells, and subterranean perched aquifer galleries which provided farmers tilling arable land in rural Malta with a water source to supplement the limited and erratic seasonal rainfall and provided communities with resilience against periods of drought. He will also highlight recently identified areas of ecological and cultural sensitivity.
