Why do you own a smartphone?

Nowadays it is a necessity, rather than a luxury, to be constantly connected to the internet. Social media and e-mail are imperative to plan events and having a smartphone ensures you can immediately receive updates. Denise Grech, first year, Higher Diploma in Psychology.

Since I’m a photographer my phone is a big part of my life. I always tend to go for the latest due to camera specs and processing power. Marc Edward Pace Portanier, first year, BA (Hons) International Business Administration.

Smartphones can be used for all sorts of things: as a notepad, events calendar, instant messages, and 24/7 connection to the internet. Nicole Borg, fourth year, Bachelor of Communications (Hons).

Have smartphones destroyed human communication?

Marc Edward Pace PortanierMarc Edward Pace Portanier

Rather than destroy it, smartphones have facilitated it, allowing us to communicate with people all over the world. While I understand that some feel it hard to interact with people who are fixated with their phones, the truth is phones allow us to constantly connect with people we care about. Denise Grech

I don’t think so – phones help us communicate with one another faster and with more ease due to apps such as Messenger and Whatsapp. Marc Edward Pace Portanier

Smartphones make it faster and more efficient to send and receive messages. But they have somewhat hindered face-to-face communication especially when people end up looking at their screens more than at the person they are sitting with. Nicole Borg

What would you do if you had to go somewhere where you cannot take your phone?

Nicole BorgNicole Borg

I would probably just make sure that I had a friend with me whose phone I could use in case of emergency. I can spend days without my phone but when I don’t have it with me my friends and family always complain because they can’t reach me. Denise Grech

I’d probably freak out at first as I admit I’m addicted to my phone, although I’ve recently gained some control back – I’d like to think that I would survive a timeout from my phone. Marc Edward Pace Portanier

I’d probably spend a day feeling like I am living in outer space but I think the longer one spends without something the more independent they grow from it. So I haven’t lost hope just yet. Nicole Borg
