Xewkija mayor Paul Azzopardi signed a twinning agreement with Modica mayor Ignazio Abbate at an event held during a visit to Malta and Gozo by a 33-member delegation from the southeastern Sicilian town. The initial contact between the two towns were made by Ray Bondin who was responsible for the insertion of Modica in Unesco’s World Heritage List.

The delegation met Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis to discuss tourism exchanges as well as internships between tourism institutes in Malta and Modica. The Italian delegation, which included three people with disabilities, also visited Arka Foundation and other State facilities for such people in Gozo. A delegation from Xewkija is expected to visit Modica in the near future.
