There were 130 runners on the start line recently, eagerly waiting to discover what the new Burmarrad route for the Urban Jungle House of Sport 10K Series had to offer.

Held under the auspices of the Malta Amateur Athletics Association, the third leg of the series attracted a good blend of athletes, from the likes of top-notch Charlton Debono, Mark Herrera, Giannella Bugeja and Josann Attard Pulis, to those who compete regularly but with modest ambitions in such races.

The scenic route, designed to be flat and fast, saw Debono storm to the finish line in a rapid 31 minutes and 43 seconds.

Second to cross the finish line was Herrera in 34:17 with Matthew Scicluna third in 35:53.

Attard Pulis started among the favourites but was beaten on the day by fellow team-mate Bugeja who was on a mission to achieve a good result in the women’s race.

Bugeja came home in 39:46, leaving Attard Pulis well behind in 42:04.

Third place went to Amanda Rapa, a new face on the scene having taken up running about a year ago. She covered the distance in 45:38.

“This 10K series has already become synonymous with a great racing experience – starting from the design of the route to the medal and other goodies that the athletes receive,” Marc Stafrace, Urban Jungle marketing manager, said after the race.

“We are pleased that athletes of various abilities take part in our races and this is in line with our strategy to reach out to everyone.

“We would like to see more new faces in upcoming events.”

The 10K series is also supported by Go & Fun, emvigee pr & marketing and Starmax.

The fourth leg is scheduled for December 8 in the Three Cities.
