The Żejtun local council is looking into having a Roman heritage trail that links the remains at Tas-Silġ with the Roman settlement in the locality.

The announcement was made by Żejtun mayor Joe Attard when launching a half marathon that will be held on September 18 along a route passing through spots of historic interest.

Role in olive oil industry growth

The marathon is part of an EU-funded project, called ‘Host: heritage of olive oil tree for sustainable tourism’, which aims at developing a product based on sport activities through initiatives such as ‘FOOT: fit on olive trails’.

This is a network of four running events taking place in four countries that played an important role in the development of the olive oil industry: Slovenia, Italy, Malta and Greece. In Malta, the half-marathon has been tied to the annual Żejt iż-Żejtun festival.

Tourists can travel to Malta to participate and 250 people have already registered to take part.
