A video has emerged showing a five-year-old boy appearing dazed and bloodied as he is put inside an ambulance after surviving an airstrike in Aleppo, Syria.

The child, Omran Daqneesh, is believed to be one of five children injured yesterday in a military strike. He is seen covered head to toe with dust and so disoriented that he seems barely aware of an open wound on his forehead.

The video, uploaded on YouTube by the Aleppo Media Centre, highlighted the desperation of the Syrian civil war and the struggle for control of the city. The fight for control of Aleppo has intensified in recent weeks following gains made by rebel groups battling the forces of the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad.

Amnesty International also reported today that 17,000 people have died in Syrian government detention facilities since the start of the 2011 uprising against Assad.
