An innovative ‘fountain of fire’, a 54-metre high ‘tower of light’ and 10,000 igniters will all come together on Sunday for a grand fireworks show in Mqabba, with organisers promising several spectacular surprises.
“We’ve been working day and night for a month to create one of the biggest displays ever to take place in Malta,” Josef Camilleri, president of the Malta Pyrotechnics Association, said.
“Today, pyrotechnics in Malta have become among the best in the world, if not the best, as we’ve shown in a number of international competitions. Everyone has made huge sacrifices throughout the year to get here and we expect the result to be a great show for everyone to enjoy,” he added.
The Santa Marija Fireworks Association, which is hosting the display, is marking 10 years since winning the first Malta International Fireworks Festival. The event was a watershed moment for the organisation, which went on to place first in the Caput Lucis fireworks world championship in Rome in 2007.
Sunday’s display will showcase the innovation the group is famous for and which has won it international admirers from pyrotechnics groups as far away as the United Kingdom and United States, several of whom are repeat visitors to the Mqabba displays.
Apart from the ‘tower of light’ and the ‘fountain of fire’, visitors will also be treated to aerial fireworks spelling out words and designs as well as colour-changing fireballs, all synchronised to music with the use of digital control systems.
There will also be a separate ground fireworks display at the Mqabba parish square.
About €60,000 worth of fireworks will light up the night.
