In preparation for the Small States of Europe Karate Championships, in Malta next month, a group of local martial artists have just taken part in the Open di Sicilia tournament.

Their performance was very much alive as they returned home with 10 medals, three of which gold, won in both Kumite (sparring) and Kata (fighting technique) categories and placing the Maltese team third overall in the classification.

In Sicily, the athletes were accompanied by Sensei Michelle Vella, Sensei James Galea, Sensei Anthony Zammit and coaches Joseph Mizzi, Josef Antonelli, Sue Zammit and Alex Horvarth.

Zammit also acted as match official during the competition.

The gold medallists in Sicily were Miriana Borg, Joelle Farrugia and Emma Grech.

Five athletes – Keelan Azzo-pardi, Jacob Camilleri, Luke Galea and Sean Micallef – were runners-up in their respective events and Sarah Galea and Daniel Mifsud won bronze.
