The previous generation Kia Sportage was already a good package – fun, safe and economical, it was one of the best offerings in the SUV market.

The fourth generation Sportage is an even better package, with a completely new chassis and engine as well as improved technology all round. Moreover, it comes with a boosted desirability factor, also thanks to its improved design. This is largely thanks to Peter Schreyer, the man who designed the original Audi TT and who now holds the design pencil at Kia.

The Sportage is part of the company’s evolution from its previous models to newer models that excite. And the excitement isn’t simply limited to looks but also extends to the driving experience. The new Sportage feels lively and dynamic on tarmac. The suspension is very forgiving, smoothing out the lumps and bumps on the road.

Depending on which engine you choose, you can opt for either two- or four-wheel drive. While the former is a better option for fuel economy, four-wheel drive comes in handy when the going gets tough. The new Sportage is also fitted with a new rack-mounted electric motor-driven power steering system, which adds to comfort and precision.

The driver enjoys a commanding position, with good visibility all round – this adds driver confidence and comfort

There are four variants to choose from: LX, EX, EX+ and GT. The latter is available for the first time to Sportage customers and delivers all the versatility of the standard Sportage while adding greater visual and dynamic appeal.

Inside, the Sportage is stylish and spacious, with generous head and legroom as well as ample luggage space. The driver enjoys a commanding position, with good visibility all round – this adds driver confidence and comfort. The dashboard is driver-centric, with dials clearly visible.

The car feels solid and steady on the road. It’s easy to manoeuvre through the traffic – as soon as you find a space, you clear through and, on the open road, the Sportage gives you plenty of power. Mind you, the Sportage is not a sports car, and was never meant to be one – however, it corners well and can afford plenty of power. Braking is sharp and efficient, thanks to electronic assistance.

Considering the competition in this segment, Kia had to come up with a very aggressive and competitive vehicle which can elbow its way in a very cutthroat segment. With the new Sportage, Kia has delivered.

Prices for the new Kia Sportage start from €22,900 for the LX variant. The GT 2.0 diesel variant (185bhp) costs €50,800.
