Former Labour Party president Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi Azzopardi has announced his intention to contest the party’s deputy leadership race.

He is the third candidatemake his intentions public following Economy Minister Chris Cardona and Justice Minister Owen Bonnici. He is the first candidate who is not serving as a minister. Dr Zrinzo Azzopardi was PL president until 2013.

The election is being held following the resignation of Konrad Mizzi in the wake of the Panama Papers scandal. Dr Mizzi was elected to the post last February in a one-horse race.

The election for a new Labour Party deputy leader for party affairs will take place between June 9 and 10, with the possibility of running the contest into the next day, in case of a run-off.
