Peter Xuereb, Malta’s candidate for the EU’s General Court, has satisfied the criteria required by EU law, the government said.

The court hears actions against the EU institutions from individuals and member states, though certain matters are reserved for the European Court of Justice.

The government said it was confident Prof. Xuereb would be officially nominated to the court by the member states on May 24.

For the first time, Malta will have two sitting judges at the General Court and one in the Court of Justice. Prof. Xuereb is the head of the Department of European Law at the University of Malta.
