The Malta U-17 girls team failed to replicate their stirring performance in their group victory over England yesterday as they went down 11-6 to the same opponents in the third/fourth place play-off at the EU Nations Junior Cup.

Having beaten England 13-10 in their opening game in Odense last week, the Maltese girls, who were beaten 20-13 by the Czech Republic in the semi-finals on Saturday, will have fancied their chances of winning yesterday’s game but the exertions of the previous three days took their toll in the final session.

After England won the opening period 3-1, the mid-sessions ended 1-1 and 3-3 but Malta’s bronze medal hopes were shattered in the fourth quarter as they lost 4-1 to concede an 11-6 defeat.

Michela Zammit was Malta’s top scorer with three goals yesterday while Sophie Camilleri, Karla Camilleri and Kendra Navarro had one each.

South Africa beat the Czech Republic 15-3 in the final yesterday.
