Charges against a number of people involved in the Paqpaqli car show incident have been drafted and filed in court, the Times of Malta is informed.

The court administration has yet to assign the case to a magistrate.

Sources told this newspaper yesterday the main charges were issued against Paul Bailey, the British multimillionaire driver who was at the wheel when his super car crashed into spectators during the Paqpaqli ghall-Istrina event last October.

Eleven individuals involved in the organisation of the activity in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund will also be facing charges.

The particulars of the accused are considered confidential at this stage and will only be published once they formally appear in court, unless the court orders a ban on the publications of the details.

At the end of January, Justice Minister Owen Bonnici published excerpts from the conclusions of the magisterial inquiry into the incident. He said the inquiry identified Mr Bailey as the main person to be blamed for the incident, in which 23 people were injured, some seriously.

He had also said that, on a secondary level, 11 members of the voluntary organising committee were also to blame and charges would be brought against them.

When contacted in the UK, Mr Bailey said he was precluded from speaking to the press but would make his statement in court.

Attorney General Peter Grech turned down a request by this newspaper to obtain a copy of the 1,700-page report of the magisterial inquiry into the incident.

Dr Grech said his office was at a delicate stage of analysing the contents of the report and did not consider the release of any information was appropriate.

According to law, it is the Attorney General who decides whether a copy of a magisterial inquiry report should be published.
