Pope Francis has today accepted the resignation of Bishop Sylvester Carmel Magro OFM, from the pastoral case of the Apostolic Vicariate of Benghazi in Libya.

Mgr George Bugeja OFM, who has been serving as coadjutor bishop in Tripoli, will be taking over.

Pope Francis thanked the bishop for his “selfless dedicated episcopal ministry which is well known and appreciated for its human warmth and its spiritual closeness fo the people of God in Benghazi”.

Mgr Bugeja was born in Xaghra in 1962 and was ordained priest in 1986.

He has served as parish priest at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Sliema and was superior of the Convent of St Anthony of Padova in Ghajnsielem.

Last July, he was appointed coadjutor bishop of Tripoli and received his episcopal ordination on September 4.
