Revellers wearing elaborate masks and costumes have taken over Venice as they celebrate the 2016 edition of one of the world's oldest carnivals.

The pre-Lent festival features art, music and a local Venetian favorite, the traditional Procession of the Twelve Marias, a reenactment of the liberation of 12 young women kidnapped by pirates.

Carnival is celebrated throughout Italy.

It was first held in Venice in the 11th century and remains a staple celebration for locals.

This year's carnival runs until February 9th.
