It is arguably one of the most anticipated nights of the year as Malta selects its representative for the Eurovision Song Contest.

Loved and derided in equal measure, this year's international song festival will be held in Stockholm, Sweden.

The show is being screened live on TVM from the Mediterranean Conference Centre.

Fourteen songs were selected last night during the semi-final:

Deborah C - All Around The World - by Michael James Down, Jonas Gladnikoff, Primoz Poglage, Matthew Ker & Angie Laus (Televoting 52302101)

Franklin - Little Love - by Cyprian Cassar and Matthew Muxu Mercieca (52302102)

Daniel Testa - Under The Sun - by Daniel Testa, Elton Zarb and Matthew Muxu Mercieca (52302103)

Kim - Lighthouse - by Cyprian Cassar & Matthew Muxu Mercieca (52302114)

Several artists along with their friends have been sharing their songs on social media and urging the public to vote.

During last night's show described as "too long" by several critics, 20 acts vied for a place in this evening's final. Last year’s winner Amber opened the semifinal with a reprise of Warrior.

A seven-part panel — six international juries plus Maltese televoters — decided the list of finalists.

It appears that it was not just the songs which were under scrutiny last night. Many couldn't help but notice the similarity of the dresses worn by some performers.
