The Department of Legal History and Methodology within the Faculty of Laws at the University of Malta has launched a book about Maltese civil law.

The book, Notes of Maltese Civil Law, is edited by President Emeritus Ugo Mifsud Bonnici and consists in the transcribed lecture notes of Giovanni Caruana (1866-1923) on Maltese Civil Law. These lecture notes were transcribed by one of his students (who later became a professor) Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici (1897-1948).

The book is the first in a series of books being published by the Department of Legal History and Methodology within the Historic Maltese Legal Materials Series: Research on Maltese Historic Legal Materials, directed by Raymond Mangion.

Although Caruana’s lecture notes are in Italian and date back to the academic year 1918-1919, they are still of relevance todate because they shed light on the historical development of the Maltese legal system, on the influences of Roman Law and the Civil Law tradition which it gave birth to, on Maltese law in a general way and on civil law in particular.

The publication will be followed by a second volume which relates to civil procedure. The volume will consist of the lecture notes of Giovanni Caruana on civil procedure.
