A new extention has added 372 new graves to Santa Marija Cemetery, Xewkija, bringing the total to 1,152. Of these, 10 per cent are common graves owned by the State, for people who do not own a private tomb.

The common graves were also refurbished.

Over the years the cemetery has been enlarged several times. The previous expansion was in 1992.

The extension was opened by Gozo Minister Anton Refalo and the new graves were blessed by Bishop Mario Grech, who also led a concelebrated Mass.
