Newcomers Floriana and Starlites Sports Experience were knocked out of the St James Hospital Shield after slumping to their second straight defeat at the hands of Gżira Athleta and PAVI Depiro respectively.

The inexperienced Starlites made a good start but they faltered when the Depiro girls began to increase their pressure in the second quarter.

Starlites were in front until the closing minutes of the second quarter, 18-17, but thereafter Depiro’s full-court press changed the balance of the game.

Depiro scored the last eight points before the interval to lead 25-18.

Starlites stayed in touch until the fifth minute of the third quarter, 31-23, but Depiro assumed control to start the last 10 minutes 39-25 ahead.

As Starlites’ reaction failed to arrive, Depiro went on to win 57-35.

Gżira Athleta launched their Shield commitments with victory over Floriana.

After Floriana went 6-2 ahead, Gżira improved to pot the next 10 points.

After changing ends 34-21 ahead, Athleta drove home their supremacy for a comfortable 69-46 victory.
