Between July 9 and 10, Athletics Malta participated in the European Under-23 Championships in Tallinn, Estonia.

The country was represented by Charlotte Wingfield in the women’s 100m and 200m while Reece Dimech took part in the men’s 400m.

Wingfield placed fourth in Heat Two of the 100m in a time of 11.78. She was ninth overall from a field of 23 starters.

Unfortunately for her, however, she missed the final by one place and a mere 0.01 of a second.

After coming so close to making the final, Wingfield said: “I am slightly disappointed but happy at the same time in the knowledge that I was ninth overall in the European Under-23 Champion-ships.

“I am thankful for the experiences I had in the last two months and the achievements that I have been rewarded with.”

In the 200m, Wingfield was sixth in Heat Three in a time of 24.25 while Dimech was 20th overall in the 400m in a time of 49.73.

This week, athletes from Malta will be taking part in the European Junior Championships being held in Eskilstuna, Sweden.

Satisfied with the standard reached by discus thrower Luke Farrugia, javelin’s Bradley Mifsud and 100m sprinter Robyn Zammit, Athletics Malta decided to exceed its usual quota of two representatives for these championships and included all three hopefuls in their team.

Meanwhile, it was also confirmed that Malta will also be represented in the IAAF World Youth Championships being held in Cali, Colombia, and starting on Wednesday.

Thanks to her excellent 400m time of 55.08 in Baku, last month, Janet Richard was an automatic qualifier for this prestigious international meeting.

Although the standard of the World Youth Championships are very high, it is hoped that Richard will be able to challenge for a spot in the second round.
