The Bormla Regatta Club underlined their supremacy in the youth sector after retaining the Under-18 championship Shield for the fifth time in succession.

The young oarsmen from Cospicua topped the standings with 72 points after prevailing in three of the five races held recently in Rinella, Kalkara.

The events won by Bormla carried most points – Tal-Pass (two and four oarsmen), between them yielding 64 points.

Bormla failed to make the podium in the second race in programme for Frejgatini – won by Birżebbuġa – and placed second behind Senglea in the Kajjikki race.

In the final classification, Kalkara and Birżebbuġa tied for second place on 40 points each with Senglea completing the standings on 20 points.

In the all-time youth regatta winners’ list, Bormla lead with 13 titles with Senglea way behind on three and Vittoriosa one title. The first edition of the races was held in 1999.

This year, the motivation for the regatta clubs was two-fold.

Besides giving the young sportsmen a chance to prove themselves in competition while promoting the spirit of fair play, the occasion also doubled as a philanthropic activity in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund.

The winners were presented with their trophies and the Shield by President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca.
