The Hibernians Basketball Club and nursery have just concluded another successful season, the fine results obtained being the fruit of hard work by the technical staff, the club said in a statement.

Hibs won the men’s league, MBA Shield and KO in Division Two.

The championship was hard-fought with Mellieħa reaching the finals and only going down to the Paolites in the decisive fifth play-off from the series.

Most of the players in the squad, led by Ruben Baldacchino, came through the nursery.

In addition to their success in Division Two, the Paolites also won the Under-23 women’s league as well as the boys’ Under-16 and girls’ Under-14 competitions, hosted by the MBA.

Nursery head coach Tony Cassar said last season Hibs engaged two Italian players, Fabrizio Mariani and Silvia Gambino who, besides making their mark for the senior teams, also helped the nursery players to improve.

Coach Winnie Buhagiar, whose association with Hibernians BC spans several years, was responsible for the women’s U-23 team.

U-14 girls’ team coach Nathalie Farrugia insisted on seeing her group, mostly made up of nursery players, flourish.

The U-16 boys, led by Silvio Cassar and his no.2  Claudio Laferla, went through the league trek unbeaten, playing the best basketball despite the absence of the valid Kurt Cassar who played Rome side Stella Azzurra last season.
