The Malta Basketball Association (MBA), spearheaded by president Paul Sultana, has been entrusted with the organisation of the FIBA Europe General Assembly which will see the participation of delegations from the European basketball federations.

The General Assembly, taking place tomorrow and Sunday at the Grand Hotel Excelsior, is FIBA’s supreme authority, comprising all the 52 European national federation members.

High ranking officials from FIBA World are also attending this year’s meeting which can be considered as one of the top sporting events in Malta this year, featuring the participation of more than 150 delegates.

FIBA World president Horacio Muratore (Argentina) and general secretary Patrick Baumann (Switzerland) are among the top officials who have confirmed their participation in this weekend’s FIBA General Assembly.

They will join FIBA Europe president Turgay Demirel (Turkey) and general secretary Kamil Novak (Czech Republic) in discussing various aspects of basketball in Europe.

Proposals on a possible new European club competition format as well as the new national team competitions calendar, which could be implemented from 2017, are among the main topics on the agenda.

In a statement, the MBA said it was very proud that Europe’s top basketball body has chosen Malta as host of this year’s General Assembly.

“The MBA is confident that this event will be a successful one,” the governing body of Maltese basketball said in a statement.

“We would like to thank all those who are contributing to ensure that this event will be a memorable one for Malta and the MBA.”
