Voila Dry makes it three on the trot

The St Francis Cup Championship final for Copper Class trotters was the major event on the card yesterday at the racetrack.

The race was held over a short distance of 2,140m and was won by French Voila Dry under the guidance of Ivan Bilocca.

The programme consisted of seven races in all and included a Premier event and an international race between Maltese and Swedish drivers based in Sundbyholm.

As expected, favourite Voila Dry took the lead immediately after the first few metres of the Copper final.

This six-year-old trotter was unchallenged throughout the distance and past the post first, easily by three lengths from Amiral Benault (Redent Magro) and Darco As (Marco Tanti). Tornado Hornline (Charles Camilleri) followed home in fourth place.

Fr Mario Attard, the person behind the competition, presented the winning trophy to driver Bilocca and his father Calcidon Bilocca, owner of the wining horse.

For Voila Dry this was its third consecutive win this year at the racetrack.

In the Premier race, Denmark’s Nico Oland (Julian Farrugia) upped its pace around 300m from the post to finish first ahead of Austrian Striking Actions (George Attard), Zwack (Eric Bezzina) and Palazio Valterne (David Ellul) in that order.

Nico Oland clocked an average time of 1.13.7” per kilometre.

The international race was open for Silver and Bronze trotters.

Here, young driver Carl Caruana met no difficulty in winning the honours with Ravageur De Payre.
