Yesterday marked the 73rd anniversary of King George VI’s proclamation on April 15, 1942, awarding Malta the George Cross – inscribed “For Gallantry” – for its sacrifice in World War II. Last night, a commemorative ceremony featuring performances and archival footage was held in St George’s Square, Valletta, where the medal was awarded to the entire Maltese population on September 13, 1942.
