Eden Leisure Group has organised a clean-up day of the newly renovated Wignacourt Tower in St Paul’s Bay. It is the oldest coastal watch tower still standing in Malta, built by Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt in 1610.

Under the supervision of Din l-Art Ħelwa, which has undertaken the restoration of the 405-year-old tower, a team of around 20 volunteers from the leisure company scoured both levels, washed, dusted the rooms, sanded, varnished and polished various pieces of furniture and exhibits.

The place was transformed and left almost ready to be opened to the public, a job that would have taken regular volunteers several weeks to complete, said the NGO.

“We are proud to have been able to take part in the final stages of the tower’s restoration,” said Kate de Cesare from Eden Leisure Group. “It is a heritage gem with a rich and exciting history. It was also a wonderful opportunity for our staff to work together in a different environment and learn more about our history.”
