An underground emergency flour mill behind Mount Carmel church, Xlendi, has been restored on the initiative of Munxar council.

It is the only underground mill in Gozo of the eight built in the Maltese islands in 1954-1955 by the British colonial office to enable bread to be made for the local population in case other sources of food became unavailable in the event of war.

Funding for the project was provided by the EU and by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority’s Environment Initiatives Partnership programme. It was inaugurated by Gozo Ministry chief of staff Christian Zammit, in lieu of the minister.
