Former Malta national coach Terenzio Polverini passed away in Terni, Italy, last week, aged 79.

Polverini will long be remembered for having guided the national team to their first ever victory in a competitive international match.

It was in February 1975 that Polverini led Malta to a 2-0 victory over Greece in a European Championship qualifier at the Empire Stadium in Gżira. Malta’s scorers on the day were Ritchie Aquilina and Vincent Magro.

Polverini arrived in Malta in 1973 when he took charge of Sliema Wanderers and a year later he replaced Victor Scerri as coach of the national team.

He remained in charge until March 10, 1976 and in his nine matches in charge he managed one win, two draws and six defeats. He was eventually replaced by Johnny Calleja.

After his spell with the national team, Polverini went on to coach Valletta, Hibernians, Floriana, Ħamrun Spartans and Naxxar Lions.
