The owners of the finest flat horses on the islands will be vying for the Ledon Cup at Marsa on Sunday.

The new race, sponsored by Glow Lighting, is sure to become a favourite fixture among racing enthusiasts in the years to come.

The mile long challenge promises to be a closely contested affair as the top flat horses are all in the entry list.

The line-up includes current derby champion Gold as Good, owned and trained by Jonathan Abel, as well as 2012 derby winner Sleepwalking, owned and trained by Matthew Grech.

Butter Milk, the 2011 derby winner, will be in with a shout if he breaks from the stalls and so will Kimberly Downs, owned by Michael Sultana.

Sultana is an established jockey also having won the derby in 2013.

He was runner-up in 2014 on Kim. But, could the weight on Kimberly Downs’s back – 72 kilos – over a long distance slow this horse along the distance?

Sarah Borg will ride Key Art as Timolins will surely rank among the favourites.

Meanwhile, there will be two new Italian horses – Motobecane and mare Alta Velocita – also contesting the final on Sunday.

The Ledon Cup is the seventh race on the card and starts at 4pm.
