Cleaning works at lower St Elmo in Valletta are to start tomorrow by the Cleansing Directorate within the Infrastructure Ministry and the Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation.

Carnival enthusiasts will be helping out and the police will be present for the operation.

It is estimated that some 90 tons of waste will be removed.

The waste has accumulated over a number of years and includes carnival float remains, construction waste and furniture.

The area was used as an Officers’ Quarters under the British and for the filming of Midnight Express.
