A plot to kill boxer Scott Dixon “might be” stemming from a false report, but investigations are still underway, a police inspector told court yesterday.

Police Inspector Chris Pullicino testified that investigations into the alleged plot began when television presenter Stephanie Chircop and her boyfriend, boxer Scott Dixon, went to the police headquarters in November 2011.

They claimed they had footage of a Polish national claiming he had been commissioned by Silvio Scerri to kill Mr Dixon. Mr Scerri is now the Home Affairs Ministry’s chief of staff.

Mr Pullicino said Mr Scerri was questioned over the allegation that he had commissioned someone to kill Mr Dixon, the boyfriend of his former partner, Ms Chircop. He said the police also seized a number of computers, CCTV footage and several documents.

The police spoke to the Pole, identified in court only by his first name: Karol, who said that a certain Alex Zammit took him to Mr Scerri’s house and it was there that Mr Scerri “invited” him to kill Mr Dixon. He said the police also interrogated Mr Zammit and Ms Chircop as part of the investigations.

Mr Pullicino said that according to the information collected by the police so far, it might have been a false report but the magisterial inquiry and investigations are still ongoing so he could not elab-orate further.

He was testifying in the libel proceedings Ms Chircop filed against the former editor of Maltese-language newspaper Illum, Julia Farrugia, over an article that claimed she was being investigated by the police over a frame-up and criminal conspiracy. The article was published on August 5, 2012.

The case continues before Magistrate Francesco Depasquale.

Lawyer Adrian Camilleri appeared for Ms Farrugia while Joe Zammit Maempel appeared for Ms Chircop.
