The 37th meeting of the season, made up of ten races, was held at the racetrack yesterday after-noon.

Certainly, the two most important events on the card were a trotting Premier Class race, on a long distance of 2,640m, and a flat race over 1,750m.

Fifteen horses lined up for the Premier Class race.

Quel Noir (Mark Mifsud) was the fastest horse in the early stages, opening a half-length’s lead from Swedish mare Nova Kebell (Redent Magro) and Blizzard Ad (Frencu Cassar).

With 100m to go, Quel Noir failed to keep the same pace and surrendered the lead to favourite Nova Kebell which prevailed by less than a length from Palazio Valterne (David Ellul).

Ourasi Diams (Anthony Fenech) followed in third place.

Nova Kebell clocked an average time of 1.16.8” per kilometre. This was its second win in succession.

Only four horses took part in the flat race.

Timolin (Michael Sultana) was fastest out of the blocks and in the first few metres of the race this German horse was slightly ahead of Key Art (Sarah Borg) and Sleepwalking (Demis Zammit).

With 500m to go, Timolin ran out of steam and was overtaken by Key Art which dashed first past the post a very comfortable winner.

Ollie Fliptrik (Eric Zammit) was third behind Timolin. For Key Art this was its first win at the Marsa Racetrack.

In the trotting Gold Class race, Julian Farrugia’s Madam Di Poggio was leading the charge when the horses turned for the home stretch.

This Italian eight-year-old mare surprised the rest and triumphed by two lengths from Beckham Bob (Paul Galea). Pro Shop (Felix Casha) was third ahead of Purple Hall (Charles Camilleri).

The card yesterday also in-cluded three races for Silver Class trotters.

The first was won by race favourite Grace Party (Noel Baldacchino) which secured its fifth win of the year and the second in a row after taking the lead in the last 500 metres.

Alfa Dream (James Briffa) ran untroubled in the final straight of the next Silver race for its first win in Malta.

In the third Silver race, New Style (Melvin Farrugia) led all the way to a resounding victory.

Another meeting at the racetrack will be held next Friday evening.
