Malta successfully defended the raffa title at the International Open Tournament after beating hosts Turkey in the final yesterday.

David and Reno Farrugia, under the guidance of Yacine Kafi, were a cut above the rest, winning all their matches to claim gold in Kemer.

Victories over France, Turkey, Algeria, Latvia, Egypt, Bulgaria, Switzerland and Slovakia in the first phase of the competition earned the Maltese duo a berth in the semi-finals where they knocked out Japan.

Having beaten Turkey in the opening round, the Farrugia brothers again underlined their top billing as they outclassed the hosts 12-3 in a one-sided final.

David and Reno Farrugia also enjoyed a positive debut in the volo tournament.

Volo is a new discipline for the Maltese duo but they sprung a surprise after winning the bronze medal.

Malta’s participation in Turkey was made possible thanks to the assistance of the Maltese Olympic Committee and the Kunsill Malti għall-iSport.
