Vittoriosa dressed up in candlelight yesterday for the annual Birgu By Night festival which, as usual, drew thousands of people within its bastions.

Street lights were turned off and the narrow, ancient streets were lit by hundreds of candles. Many people also used candles to light up their house facades and front rooms.

People in period costumes walked in the newly restored streets of the mediaeval collachio while others played traditional musical instruments in street corners.

Churches and museums remained open well into the night, and concerts were laid on in the main square and other open spaces.

Visitors could also admire artisan work and enjoy re-enactments between the old gates of couvre porte.

Birgu by Night was part of Brgufest, which continues this morning - See programme at http://birgu.gov.mt/node/1146
