The Nationalist Party has criticised the government for not explaining what was causing a stench around the Sant' Antnin plant in Marsascala over the past weeks.

Party environment spokesman Charlo' Bonnici said repeated complaints made to Wasteserv by neighbours had been met with silence.

He asked if this was a case that the fast roller shutter in the shed where domestic waste was processed was being left open.

Was it true that bales of refuse known as RDF were being kept in the plant for an excessive period of time, producing a stench and posing a fire risk?

Mr Bonnici asked what inspections Mepa was making to ensure that the plant was operating according to permit conditions.

He also asked whether the Mechanical Treatment Plant for the generation of bio gas was working and whether one of the Digestion Tanks was being kept open for repairs, adding to the stench.
