Former Malta midfielder Kevin Sammut’s 10-year ban for match-fixing has been extended globally by FIFA.

On May 28, the Lausanne-based Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) banned Sammut from all football-related activities for a period of 10 years following proceedings carried out by UEFA disciplinary bodies in relation to the manipulation of Malta’s 4-0 defeat to Norway in a Euro 2008 qualifier.

Sammut, the only Maltese player to be sanctioned in connection with the infamous match-fixing case, had been banned for life by UEFA but appealed with CAS.

Sammut’s appeal was partially upheld by CAS who im-posed a 10-year ban on the player who, in his prime, was regarded as one of the best midfielders in Maltese football.

“The chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has decided to extend the sanctions to have worldwide effect in accordance with article 78 paragraph 1(c) and article 136ff. of the FIFA Disciplinary Code,” football’s world governing body said in a statement.

“The decisions by the chairman have been duly notified to the respective confederations and member associations today (yesterday).”
