Life is grand in this isle of ours.

The heat is on and politics takes a break from our life as we follow the world cup with bated breath wondering who will win and who will cry.

In Malta of course the ones wailing most are not the obsessives who side with Italy and England but the bars and restaurants and flag-sellers who lost out when the two countries with the biggest following in Malta were ingloriously booted out so early on in Brazil.

So less beer and burgers were had by all. But, as they say, life goes on and on.
But once this country—or part of it—excels in negativism let’s have it for the world cup as well.

Usually world cups and football tournaments are the domain of goal scorers or at least goal creators. Whatever a team does it is the one who hits the goal who is most celebrated. The creators—the positives—rule.

This world cup has been rather different. Goalkeepers have stolen the show and are the most discussed and praised. The goalies of the world, the ones who stop the creators’ shots and brilliant footwork, are all the rage.

Being the bulwark against the creators they are obviously the negatives.
So boo to these horrid creatures called goalkeepers. They hinder our joy, our fun and our world of goals.

Let’s get rid of goalkeepers to just let the positive energy flow and for all of us supporters, viewers and lovers of football to have a fantastic time with purely positive feelings.

I never realised how football, that silly sport, mixes so beautifully with politics, that other most silly of pastimes.
