A President’s Foundation for the Well-Being of Society was formed today, with former presidents and prime ministers included in its council of governors.

The foundation was set up in a ceremony that saw President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca sign a deed making the organisation an official non profit entity.

The foundation's council will also include University Rector Juanito Camilleri . It will advise President Coleiro Preca on initiatives to help improve social inclusion and standards of living.

Four new national entities have also been set up within the foundation. They are  - the National Institute for Childhood, the Observatory for Living with Dignity, the National Family research Centre, and the Centre for Freedom from Addiction.

These, Ms Coleiro Preca said, will see academics come together with members of the public in a synergy of scientific research and “popular wisdom”.

Asked if this foundation was a compromise meant to allow the President to continue perusing the same goals she had when she was social solidarity minister, Ms Coleiro Preca made a distinction between her ministerial role and that of head of state.

“I never compromise. I have my beliefs and principles but I have always adapted myself to the different roles I am in, and there will be no compromise when it comes to what needs to be done for the best interest of society,” she said.
