Young shooter Nathan Lee Xuereb yesterday won the gold medal in the Double Trap junior event at the European Championships, held in Hungary.

Xuereb produced identical scores of 28 out of 30 in the first two rounds before hitting a straight. In the final two qualifying rounds, he managed 26 and 24 for a total of 136 points, in the process securing a top-six place.

In the semi-finals, Xuereb and three other shooters were tied on 26 points but he progressed to the gold medal match after winning a shoot-off. His opponent in the final was Briton James Dedman.

Led by coach Jimmy Bugeja, Xuereb, who also took the Euro junior title in Germany last year, sealed his success in emphatic fashion after smashing 26 clays, four more than Dedman.
