Nadur basilica’s second-largest bell in the southwest belfry was recently restored. The works involved removing a corroded cast-in crown staple assembly and drilling the bell head to fit a new independent assembly. The clapper was calibrated to ensure correct sounding of the bell’s tonality, which had been lost over the years due to deep wear in the sound bow and clapper striking ball. A new set of traditional D-shackles and headstock were also fitted in time for the bell to peal on the feast of St Peter and St Paul to be celebrated in Nadur next Sunday. Nadur archpriest Mgr Jimmy Xerri embarked on the project which was coordinated by Mgr Joseph Cauchi and architect Karmenu Borg. The operation’s technical aspects were handled by campanologist Kenneth Cauchi. The bell was slung out and returned back by Michael Zerafa and Mario Camilleri.
