Darren Degabriele, the  35-year-old restaurateur who suffered severe burns after an explosion set off in his vehicle by a device suspected to have been a home-made bomb last Sunday, has died, the police said.

Mr Degabriele was driving into Marsaxlokk in a Mitsubishi Pajero vehicle accompanied by his girlfriend, who was not seriously injured.

The victim from Birzebbuga is the owner of Marsaxlokk restaurant Gente di Mare.

Investigators believe the bomb, which is believed to have been placed under the chassis of the vehicle on the side of Mr Degabriele’s seat, was detonated remotely.
