Something has got to be said about people like Jonathan Shaw who stand up to be counted even when their opinion is not in line with the party they represent.

Last week, in an interview with this paper, Jonathan publicly stated that he is personally against spring hunting and that, if it came to it, he would vote in favour of an abrogative referendum on the matter.

He made it crystal clear that this is his personal view and not necessarily that of the Nationalist Party, which, try as I may, I can’t figure out. What’s for certain is that prior to EU accession, the Nationalist Party had promised hunters that nothing would change, including spring hunting, so if they change their position now, they will seem like they are going back on their word.

Jonathan Shaw is running for the next MEP elections, and though I don’t know him too well personally I dare say that he is not one to fit into a mold easily. So whilst there’s a chance that the Nationalist Party might be using his opposing view just to lure votes from Cassola and Cacopardo, I do believe that this is really Jonathan Shaw’s position on the matter.

The question is however, would I risk voting for a man I agree with and admire but who probably doesn’t have the support of his own party?

Thanks to the transferable vote process, in the next MEP elections we can vote across party lines and elect the candidates we think are most in line with our believes regardless of the party they belong to, but whilst my hat goes off for people like Jonathan Shaw, I know that the only party that has been consistent on the matter of spring hunting; the only party that has never made any sweet deals with the hunting community is Alternattivka Demokratika.
