Swedish nine-year-old Julian Port won the Assikura Championship final for class Bronze trotters at the Marsa racetrack yesterday.

This final, held on a short distance of 2,140m, formed part of the first Spring meeting which was made up of 11 races, all for trotters.

Nine horses took part in the class Bronze final. It was Julian Port (Rodney Gatt) which stormed ahead in the opening stages of the race, opening a half length lead from Obscur De Busset (Shawn Portelli) and Willesden Hanover (Wayne Farrugia).

Julian Port remained unchallenged for most of the distance and in the final straight it easily held off the challenge of Take Out Blue (Paul Galea).

Quero Des Erablais (Frenċu Cassar) and Willesden Hanover finished third and fourth respectively.

After this final, Andrew Grech, on behalf of the sponsors, presented the winning trophy to Rodney Gatt and Emanuel Galea, the driver and owner respectively of the winning horse.

In the only class Premier race on the card, there was a close finish between French newcomer Pou-loud Keroc’h (Chris Vassallo) and Nabab Du Chatelet (Charles Camilleri) which crossed the finish line simultaneously.

After the photofinish was consulted, Poloud Keroc’h was declared the winner for its first success on Maltese soil.
