The highlight of yesterday’s programme at the racetrack was a Premier Class race on a long distance of 2,640m.

This race was won by Swedish horse Vejby Boom and formed part of the seventh meeting of the season that was made up of eight events in all. The card also included two semi-finals from the Assikura Cham-pionship, for Gold Class trotters, and a flat race over a distance of 1,250m.

Sixteen horses lined up for the Premier race. It was newcomer Pat De Fontaine (Noel Baldacchino) that stormed ahead after a few metres from the official start.

This French trotter opened a narrow lead from Quiet Way (Shawn Portelli) and Rocky Composite (Julian Farrugia) but with 300m to go, Pat De Fontaine slowed down and was overtaken by four trotters.

Quiet Way and Vejby Boom (Charles Camilleri) sprinted neck and neck in the final metres to produce a very close finish at the post.

The win was eventually awarded to Vejby Boom after the photo-finish was consulted by the racing stewards.

Midnight Passion (Eric Bezzina) and Ourasi Diams (Anthony Fenech) completed the top-four in that order.

For Vejby Boom this was its second win at the Marsa circuit.

Ten horses qualified for the final from the two Gold Class racess, held over a short distance of 2,140m.

Qurieux du Ponchet (Noel Baldacchino) dashed strongly from the outside during the last 600m of the first semi-final.

This French trotter seized the lead in the final metres and went on to gain its second win of the year, a half-length ahead of Prince Gaillard (Julian Farrugia).

Oeillet De Phens (Rodney Gatt), Quintet (Brian Zammit) and Phenix De La Roque (Charles Degiorgio) also made it to the final.

Dutch mare Wies Buitenzorg (Eric Bezzina) lived up to expectations and won its second successive race in the next semi-final.

Wies Buitenzorg ran untroubled in the straight for home and triumphed with a clear two-length margin from Happiness Photo (Julian Farrugia) and Quid D’Aliermont (Charles Camilleri).

Charm Hammering (Gilbert Farrugia) and Olry Meslois (Emmanuel Fenech) followed home in that order to reach the Assikura Championship final.

Irish mare Gold As Good (Demis Zammit) was the first out of the blocks in the flat race, opening a length’s lead from American horses Darielli (Jean Paul Caruana) and Safari Storm (Charles Vella).

Gold As Good was unable to keep the strong pace going though and was overtaken by Safari Storm with some 500m to go.

Safari Storm won the race well ahead of Gold As Good. Ollie Fliptrik (Michael Sultana) was third.

Another meeting at the racetrack will be held next Saturday.
